Mistaken Identity

 Let me begin this post by narrating an event that happened to me and is still happening to me. I stay at Satellite town Lagos and I schooled at The Learningfield Secondary School Satellite Town Lagos. Quite a popular school within that area. Most times, people always walk up to me and say; "Do you know Tega?" Tega was a student of Learningfield but she left before i entered in SS1, I got to meet her tho so we practically knew each other. And I will reply; "Yes I know Tega, why do you ask?" And the next thing I will hear is; "Wow, you guys look alike. Are you guys sisters?" And I'm like; "No we are not sisters, we are just friends". This happened for quite sometime until I graduated from secondary school. I got into CU and I found out that Tega also is in CU. Just today oo, my roommate's family came for her and her elder sister just saw me for the first time and said;"This girl look like Tega" and I'm like; "GOD WHY ME!!!!" Even someone I have never seen in my life before just saw me today and said the exact same thing i hear almost everyday in secondary school; "You look like Tega". Anytime we both are together, someone will walk up to us and ask if we are sisters. At some point, we both went to the mirror and looked at ourselves and we didn't see any resemblance whatsoever. So most times, I usually think that there is a slight possibility that maybe I'm a twin and we were switched at birth, lol. Why am I bringing this up? I am very sure that at some point in your life, you have had this experience or you must have heard statements like, "You look like someone i know" or "You look soo much like my ex" or something of that sort. I mean, the fact that we are not even related is enough to make me wonder. If you are a twin and when I say twin i mean Identical twin, you should definitely understand what i am trying to say. That moment when someone mistake you for your twin and you are like; "I'm Kehinde and not Taiye". I can just imagine what it feels like for someone to give you the identity of another person. But as much as they say you look like somebody else, there can never be two of you,even as a twin. There must be something that will differentiate you from the other person.
At this point, I will like to point out the Biblical Example of what i mean. In Genesis 27, yes i mean the whole of chapter 27, the story of how Jacob gets Isaac's blessing, you can see that Jacob was able to get his father's blessing with the identity of his elder brother Esau. ooppsssyyy.... Sorry for ending the story even before it began. Let me break it down for those who don't read their Bibles. The story began when Isaac who was old and couldn't see anymore, called his firstborn son Esau and told him to hunt animals and use it to prepare a special kind of meal so that he will eat it and bless him before he dies. But trust Mothers,they are always hearing news even before the person that it concerns. So that's how Mrs Rebekah heard what Isaac said to Esau and called her favorite son Jacob and told him everything that his father told his brother and sent him out to go and do the exact same thing. But then, Jacob realized that it wasn't all that possible because even though they are twins, Isaac will definitely be able to differentiate them because Esau is hairy and Jacob isn't. But Mrs Rebekah reassured her son to leave the rest to her and just go and do as she has said. So Jacob went to hunt an animal and his mother prepared a tasty meal the way Isaac liked it. After she was done, she gave Jacob the identity of Esau by giving Jacob Esau's cloth to wear and also covered Jacob's hands and the smooth part of his neck with goatskins thereby giving Jacob the hairy part of Esau and sent him off to his father with the tasty meal......
At this point, please i beg you, allow me to assume that you have opened Genesis 27 and you are reading the story for yourself cos my fingers are already paining me. But if you didn't, lemme just summarize it. Jacob got Esau's blessing and Esau got a temporary curse (so much for being a hunter). This is a very good example of Mistaken Identity. Jacob was able to get Esau's blessing because he took Esau's looks and Isaac was deceived because the only factor he was able to use to tell his sons differences was the hairy differences between them and that was what Jacob used. So Isaac gave the blessing of Esau to Jacob because of mistaken identity.
Your identity is your uniqueness. As each of us in CU have our own different ID cards that's how we are all different. Your identity defines you. Before I end this post, lemme take you back to how I started this post.
